Although Caroline Groot of the Netherlands won gold in the para-cycling course, she is resigning to pursue a legal career.
Blashing the field to grab the first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Dutch Para cyclist Caroline Groot
Thursday, day one of the Games, saw a spectacular Para cycling track women's 500m time trial C4-5 final.
The reigning gold medalist from Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016, Kadeena Cox of Great Britain stumbled and crashed out in the opening 50 meters.
Since her bike was mechanically sound, judges denied her the chance to have a restart.
Team officials escorted upset Cox off the course and assisted her in disconnecting from her bike.
Groot, who took bronze at the Tokyo Games, said the triumph was the best way to close off her riding career before she retires.
Her average speed was 50.610 km/h. Her finishing time was 35.566 seconds.
"Everything went perfect," she reported to the IPC at the Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Groot said she wasn't sure whether Cox would have a re-start following her race
