Since it was first presented as a demonstration sport in 1988, before being officially included to the Paralympic programming in 1992, wheelchair tennis has been a popular spectator sport.

With 51 medals and 23 golds, they stand boldly at the top of the overall medal table, considerably ahead of the second-ranked USA, who has 19 medals, six of them gold.

Among the Dutch league of heroes in the game are Esther Vergeer, Chantal Vandierendonck, Monique Kalkman-Van Den Bosch, Aniek van Koot, Diede de Groot, Sam Schröder, and Niels Vink. Strong favorites to keep their title, the later three will all be back in Paris.

In wheelchair tennis, Diede de Groot already is a legend. She won all four majors, the Paralympic gold and the Wheelchair Tennis Masters, therefore ranking first on both singles and doubles and completing the first calendar-year Super Slam ever in 2021.

It makes sense why she says, "I have a pretty big target on my back." And at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup, China's Xiaohui Li just reached that mark, therefore ending de Groot's 145 match winning run in Turkey.
