After suffering a calf injury in training camp, Russell Wilson said Thursday he's "getting closer and closer" to playing again.
Can he play Sunday when the Pittsburgh Steelers play Wilson's previous team, the Denver Broncos, and coach Sean Payton? Wilson didn't offer advice Thursday after practice.
"Got to do a lot of work today on the field and everything else, throwing and all that, so just trying to be smart," he said.
Wilson is a limited participant in this week's sessions after missing Week 1's Steelers win at Atlanta. His preseason calf ailment was "pretty strong, pretty good calf injury" he remarked.
Wilson and Mike Tomlin sat Wilson in the opener last week because his calf wasn't reacting after warming up.
"That disappointed me," he remarked. We worked hard in the training room every day, but we kept our heads up. We spent a lot of time getting ready, so when I tweaked it again, I thought, "OK, we got to be smart and not crazy push it too bad."I want to play between the white lines with our teammates."
Justin Fields replaced Wilson as starter, completing 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards and rushing 14 times for 57. All six Steelers scoring drives ended in field goals. They went 0 for 2 in the red zone, including a fourth-quarter turnover at the Atlanta 6-yard line.
Last week, Fields' backup was Kyle Allen and Wilson was the emergency third QB. Wilson stated, "I think right now I want to go" but vowed to be wise with the injury about playing this weekend.
