Tyla addresses online backlash for requesting Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X for MTV VMA.

Tyla is ignoring the naysayers after appearing to ask Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X for help holding her MTV VMA trophy.

The 22-year-old South African singer-songwriter has been making waves with her 2023 hit “Water”. The song won best afrobeat at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 11.

The Little Mermaid star, 24, and “Industry Baby” singer, 25, presented her with the award onstage. Tyla asked the stars to hold her moon man since it was too heavy, but social media people criticized her.

Oh my god," the "Truth or Dare" musician said as Lil Nas X gave her the moon man in the viral moment. You know I win honors. My strength is insufficient.”

“Please, please,” she said, holding her moon man out to them as Lil Nas X reluctantly took the trophy so Tyla could give her acceptance speech. Despite smiling, Bailey did not move.

Tyla then clarified on social media that she never asked the actor to hold her prize.

“Y'all make everything weird…,” the Johannesburg native said on X (previously Twitter) the night after the event. “I did not ask my girlfriend Halle... We gals, I won a VMAAAA.”
